Raymond Zhang was born in Acheng, Heilongjiang Province, in 1963. During his childhood he lived in the northern mountains of China. As a young man, he loved singing and working in the mountains. He was touched by the mysteries of nature and was moved by how the birch trees struggle in the wind, or the winter jasmine blooms in the snow but able to persevere in the severe weather and survive. When a famous artist came to his hometown for a plein air painting, a window was opened to the world of art.
He graduated from the Central Art Academy of Beijing where he learned to combine Western and Eastern techniques of abstract expressionism. He creates his stylish, charming works of art by using materials of oil painting and combining that with the skills involved in the freehand brushwork of traditional Chinese painting. He creates a theme according to his feelings about life and nature. His subjects are the landscapes of China’s Northeast, and his paintings express the boundless spaciousness of nature. He now lives in Beijing, China, with his wife and daughter. He makes trek to the land where he was born annually in order to replenish his spirit in the beautiful mountains, renew his closeness to nature and so better to incorporate his feeling into his paintings.
